Hypnotherapy

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

This is a modern form of hypnotherapy where the focus is on a person’s present and future, rather than past experiences.

Therapy focuses on what the client wants to achieve (the solution) rather than whatever prompted them to seek help (the problem).

Until about 15 years ago, scientists largely believed that the brain and personality was pretty much fixed and stable, however recent advances in neuroscience have shown that the brain is adaptable, like plasticine, and it can change throughout our life.

An example of this neuroplasticity is learning a new skill like driving a car.

In the beginning it’s quite overwhelming with gears, mirrors, accelerator, brake and hundreds of road rules. Yet within a relatively short space of time most of us have acquired these driving skills and our behaviour becomes automatic whenever we get behind the wheel.

How the SBF Challenge Works

We create new pathways in our brain by practice and repetition over time.

The more we do a specific activity or think a certain way, a structural path is formed which gets stronger and more resilient the more we repeat it. So much so that it’s difficult to act or think in a different way!

The brain will follow the path of least resistance and repeat what is most familiar.

This is why Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is intentionally focused toward minimising emphasis on past failings and problems (retracing negative neural pathways), and instead focuses on client’s strengths and previous successes (creating and reinforcing positive neural pathways).

How can SFH be effective?

Every day we face literally thousands of decisions, with some researchers suggesting we make up to 35 000 decisions a day!

That’s a huge workload for our conscious mind to deal with, and so the majority of these decisions (the ones we make on a regular basis) are outsourced to our subconscious mind.

Things like… how you’ll tie your shoe laces, which hand you’ll use to open the fridge, which route you’ll take to work, what you do when you feel stressed or overwhelmed.

We’ve performed these actions so often that our brain resorts to a learned behaviour or habit so we don’t even consciously think before we act!

Which is great if you have healthy habits and routines, a positive mental attitude and you’re bubbling with self confidence….

But not so great if your subconscious mind has been conditioned to form unhealthy habits, a victim mentality and poor self esteem.
